ROSALIND
âNo, Iâm just surprised as itâs late,â Shannon replies to my question, looking incredibly awkward. And thatâs not the only thing I notice about her appearance. I see the outfit she is wearing, as well as the fact her hair and make-up are immaculate, and itâs a far cry from how sheâs looked for the majority of this trip. Her incredible grooming allows me to ask my next question.
âHave you been out this evening?â
âMe? Erm, no,â she replies, before surely realising that if she hasnât it makes no sense for her to be so dressed up. âWell, I mean, I did go out for a little while. Just to the hotel restaurant.â
âWow, you made all this effort for the hotel restaurant,â I say with a smirk. âWas it worth it?â
âIt was okay,â Shannon replies, and Iâm enjoying watching her squirm, clearly unaware that I know exactly why she was dressing to impress tonight, and it had nothing to do with any restaurant, thatâs for sure.
âItâs funny, because I was eating in the restaurant earlier and I didnât see you down there,â I say, stringing out her discomfort a little longer.
âOh, we must have missed each other. I ate quite late,â Shannon replies, and I pretend that sounds like the truth to me before I finally show some mercy and move on.
âCan I come in?â
Shannon looks as if the last thing she wants to do is allow me into her room, but I add the word âpleaseâ and she reluctantly steps aside.
I enter her room and immediately note the empty bottle of champagne, as well as the two glasses by the bed, though only one of them looks to have been used. I could ask about those things and see what Shannon has to say for herself, but I donât, preferring instead to ask a different question â and itâs one that is far more direct.
No sooner has Shannon closed the hotel room door behind me than I fire it at her.
âHas my husband tried it on with you?â
I watch the colour drain from the face of my tour guide.
âIâm sorry, what?â
âDonovan. Has he tried anything with you? Iâm talking about more than flirting, which Iâm sure heâs done plenty of, but thatâs hardly the biggest crime in the world. Iâm talking about actually propositioning you or touching you or doing anything at all that makes it clear that he wants to sleep with you?â
There is no sign of the blood returning to Shannonâs pale face, nor are there any signs of this woman beginning to tell the truth with me.
âNo, not at all!â she replies, far too quickly to be believable.
âAre you sure about that?â
âYes!â
That was another chance for Shannon to tell the truth, but sheâs skipped right past it and now the chance has gone.
âI see,â I say, taking a seat on the edge of her bed before lowering my head and shaking it. âIâm sorry for having to ask. Itâs just, Iâve been worried. My husband is the
